About Me and My Approach

A Therapist — and a Teacher

Before becoming a mental health therapist, I spent many years working in education as a teacher, school counselor, and academic advisor. Those experiences continue to influence how I approach therapy and how I understand the process of personal growth.

One of the most important things I learned as an educator is that people develop confidence through their own experiences. We can offer information, encouragement, and guidance, but meaningful learning happens when someone begins to recognize what they are capable of doing for themselves.

I believe the same is true in therapy.

People often come to counseling hoping to find answers to problems that have become difficult to manage. Sometimes they feel uncertain about their decisions, discouraged by past experiences, or frustrated that familiar ways of coping no longer seem to work.

My role is not to tell someone how to live their life. Instead, I help people examine their experiences, recognize patterns in their thinking and behavior, consider different perspectives, and discover possibilities they may not have recognized before.

I also believe that learning involves trial and error. We do not always make the best decision the first time, and change rarely follows a straight path. What matters is what we learn from those experiences and how we use that learning to move forward.

In our work together, I encourage clients to recognize their abilities, notice their progress, and develop greater confidence in making decisions that reflect their own values and goals.

Personal growth is not a destination where we finally become the person we are supposed to be. It is an ongoing process of learning about ourselves, adapting to new experiences, and discovering different ways to live.

There is no universal instruction manual for being human. Each of us brings a different history, different strengths, and different circumstances to the challenges we face.

A teacher cannot do the learning for someone else, and a therapist cannot make another person change. But both can help create the conditions in which learning, confidence, and meaningful change become possible.

What Therapy With Me Is Like

I believe therapy works best when people feel comfortable being themselves, speaking openly, and knowing they will be treated with respect. You do not need to arrive with the right words, a clear explanation of your difficulties, or a complete understanding of what you want to change.

My approach is person-centered and collaborative. I listen carefully, ask questions, offer observations, and help you explore connections between your experiences, beliefs, emotions, and behavior. Sometimes our conversations focus on gaining a different perspective. At other times, we may work on practical strategies for managing a particular challenge.

I do not believe there is one approach that works for everyone. We will work at a pace that respects your needs, your readiness for change, and the kind of guidance you find helpful.

Our First Appointment

Our first appointment is an opportunity for us to get acquainted and begin discussing what has brought you to therapy.

I will ask about your current concerns, relevant life experiences, personal history, and what you hope to accomplish. We will also discuss confidentiality, including the circumstances in which the law requires or permits information to be shared.

You will have opportunities to ask questions about my approach and decide whether you feel comfortable working with me. Finding a therapist who feels like a good fit is an important part of the process.

Together, we will begin identifying goals that are meaningful to you. These goals may become clearer or change as we continue working together.

Our Ongoing Work Together

In our ongoing appointments, you are welcome to bring whatever feels important in your life. This might include a recent experience, a difficult interaction, a recurring thought, a decision you are struggling with, or something you have begun noticing about yourself.

Sometimes it helps to keep notes or a journal between appointments so that you can remember experiences, questions, or patterns you would like to explore.

We may examine how past experiences influence your present reactions, how certain beliefs affect your decisions, or how familiar coping strategies may no longer be helping you.

I may ask reflective questions, share psychological information, suggest a different way of looking at a situation, or help you identify small, practical steps toward a goal.

There may also be appointments when you are unsure what to discuss. That is okay. I can help you explore what has been happening in your life, consider what matters most to you, and identify areas that may deserve attention.

Therapy is not about following someone else's instructions for living. It is about developing greater awareness, recognizing your abilities, and learning to make choices that work for you.

Therapy begins with being heard. Meaningful change grows through understanding, trust, and working together.
